Welcome Message from the Head

John Scurr Primary School honours the values of John and Julia Scurr who fought for equality and access to education for East End families 90 years ago. We offer an IQM accredited inclusive and enriched curriculum with ‘a wide range of outings and extra-curricular activities’ to develop all aspects of learning for children.

We have a dedicated and skilled workforce, who work hard with our governors and parents to promote good progress and attainment for all, and we have high expectations of everyone in our school and value their contribution. Maybe you might be tempted by our parents’ activities or your child may want to be part of our Pupil Voice Committee?
We are well hidden amongst our neighbourhood but we are proud to be situated within the heart of the communities that live near Tower Hamlets Town Hall, The Royal London Hospital, Queen Mary University and within the communities of Stepney Green, Bethnal Green and Whitechapel- a real Jewel of the East End!

We are really proud of the curriculum we offer here at John Scurr, where children take full advantage of all that London has to offer. We are a leading school for the knowledge-rich Unity CUSP curriculum – you will be amazed at our ‘positive place for learning’.
Our pupils benefit from our creative team of teachers and support staff. We are committed to excellent outcomes for all our pupils- including obtaining a Gold Healthy School Award for our wellbeing and sporting achievements.

Our motto is ‘Be the Best that you can be’ and Ofsted (2023) told us that ‘’ pupils behave maturely and leaders have high expectations that are commonly understood by all’.  We aim to equip all our children with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to be successful in their learning.

Parents and carers can meet with teachers at any time throughout the year. We have termly 1:1 meetings for parents, Informal Tea parties and fitness sessions for parents. We operate a  free breakfast club for pupils from Reception to Y6 that offers a healthy breakfast and means that you can drop children off at 8am.
We find this really helps pupils to have a calm start to the day, and aids concentration and learning. We also offer a Tea Time club until 4pm for our families – if you need an extra extension to the school day. Our After School Clubs provide an enriched offer that allow pupils to make friends and gain a variety of skills.

Our free Readiness Tuition and Booster offer for children ensures that no child is left behind. Our pupils all have access to online platforms that support their learning in school and our Reading Pledge ensures a love of reading for all pupils.

John Scurr himself believed strongly in fairness and equality and in the importance of developing a supportive community. Our current learning community continue with his tradition and we foster and develop his values through our mutual code of Respect, Resilience, Resourcefulness, Readiness and Reflection.
By joining us you will also be part of creating that friendly atmosphere at our school.
