Enrichment

Debate Mate

At John Scurr, Year 5 and Year 6 can take part in Debate Mate, an exciting club that teaches children debating skills and improves their confidence. The club is run by volunteers from the charity Debate Mate and sessions involve a mix of games, discussion and mock debates. Children rapidly grow accustomed to speaking in front of an audience and learn how to think on their feet during a live debate. The sessions are high energy, thought-provoking and a lot of fun!

Music Enrichment

John Scurr Primary school works closely with THAMES music specialists  – to ensure our pupils receive specialist music provision and role models. Currently this is focused on teaching Djembe in Year 3 and teaching Glockenspiel in Years 4 and Year 6. We also work closely with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to ensure pupils in Early Years,  KS1 and KS2 take part in their programme of events. This is led by Joanne Gibson, who works as a singing and music lead with us across all Key Stages. Joanne also runs our after school choir.

Rural and Forest School

John Scurr Primary School ensures all pupils have a rolling programme of Rural and ‘wilding ‘experiences across all Key Stages. We have developed our Edible Garden to include a Forest School and teachers are trained in using this facility to deepen pupil’s knowledge of nature across all subject areas.

In addition to this we have partnerships with Spitalfield’s Farm, Soanes Centre , Stepney City Farm Goresfield Rural Education Centre to ensure that pupils receive experiences beyond their city and urban environment.

After School Clubs

We run a variety of After School Clubs for all pupils on a weekly basis – these take place from 3- 4pm across the school and are led by our talented Support staff-The programme changes every term but we are known to develop excellent specialists in Kingball, Origami, sewing, football and Uno (amongst our many other clubs!). Satnam Sokhal oversees the provision and this forms part of the offer at John Scurr.

Theatre, Museum and Performance Offer

We are really fortunate to benefit from the rich London Theatre offer at John Scurr school, we have a very close affinity with  Half Moon theatre . Our pupils in Early Years and KS1 benefit from the experiences of their speech bubble and performances and in KS2, our pupils benefit from their Next Steps Drama transition programme.

We also work closely with The Barbican, British Museum, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum and the Docklands Museum as part of their outreach work in schools. This programme ensures pupils have a rich cultural experience throughout their time at John Scurr.

Chess at John Scurr

We are proud to be a member of the Chess in School Community and one of the many schools in the borough who receive tuition and regularly take part in high quality Chess Tournaments both locally, London wide and nationally. Currently we focus our Chess offer across Year 4, 5 and 6.

Sports and Fitness enrichment

We have our very own Sports coach at John Scurr. Jermaine Pemberton Smith is a qualified coach and works across all year groups and phases to ensure pupil’s physical and sporting development is well planned for. Jermaine also all our Year 6 to Mile End swimming pool for their weekly lessons.

We are proud to compete in the Tower Hamlets Sports Partnership tournaments and have teams across all sports and for all abilities. We even have a Fathers Football team that train regularly on Thursday after school.

We boast a Mile a Day track that surrounds our Key Stage 2 playground and children take part in The Daily mile initiative.

School Library Service

One of our greatest enrichment offers at John Scurr is our membership of the School’s Library Service which enables our teachers to refresh their artefacts, reading material and real life objects across the curriculum. This ensures that our materials are always in line with our ‘anti – racist’ curriculum and allows our pupils to receive relevant resources that are replenished termly.
